Farm vets call on House of Lords to safeguard the future of British food

Open letter expresses disappointment at the recent rejection of the Agriculture Bill amendments during the final Commons debate

Leaders from the farm animal veterinary profession have written to the House of Lords calling for the upper chamber to reject the Agriculture Bill and return it to the House of Commons. This follows the defeat last week of an amendment to the Bill which would have protected animal welfare and food standards for imports entering Britain in future trade deals.

Nikki Hopkins, President of the British Cattle Veterinary Association, Nick Perkins President of the Goat Veterinary Society, and Nick Hart President of the Sheep Veterinary Society, have called on members of the Food, Poverty, Health and Environment Committee in particular to lead the way in securing this once-in-a-generation opportunity to uphold animal welfare, keep consumers safe and back British farming.
